UK Magazine ‘The Wire’ sends “urgent” call for support amid “ongoing struggle”
This October, the magazine will be publishing its 500th issue.
The Wire, an independent print and online magazine based in the UK, is in need of financial support.
In an “urgent” statement published today, May 23rd, the publication asked readers to purchase a subscription or a physical copy of the latest edition. The Wire said that running the magazine is "becoming increasingly difficult” due to rising print and distribution fees as well as the ever-evolving music industry. Not only has it been an “ongoing struggle” for The Wire, but an “existential threat,” the statement reads.
Since being first printed in 1982, The Wire has become an esteemed and essential source for music discovery and education, giving often-overlooked artists the spotlight. After 15 years in print, it launched its website in 1997. In 2013, an online archive of its entire back-catalog became available to subscribers. Its 500th issue will be coming this October.
