Music industry and nightlife veteran J-Cush is starting a new party series and multimedia outlet that aims to blend art, fashion, and music.
NOWHERE’s first installment is taking place on February 5th in Brooklyn at public records. The impresario enlists partner UCHE for a live set, alongside Chicago’s Tyree Cooper, New York’s SAY3, and a special Jersey Club and ballroom back-to-back-to-back from MikeQ, Nadus, and DJ TiGa. The party’s founder will also be getting behind the decks to kick the night off.
“Nowhere weaves the past, present and future: bridging teachings from dubplate derived, sound system based cultures, born as a reaction to societies and life’s struggles,” J-Cush tells HEADS KNOW. “The focus is showcasing unreleased music, new and old; whether the African diasporic sounds with Caribbean, British, American and Latin sonics.”
He continues: “The once fringe clubland spaces, where expression was a necessity have shifted away from the polarizing, revolutionary dance floors that Nowhere was born from, to a culture that prioritises the showmanship and commodification of artists and club goers alike, prioritising individually performative moments over the essential and needed community building aspects of grassroots club cultures, Nowhere is here to revive and showcase [that] whilst helping to redefine the future.”
Jamie Imanian-Friedman, also known as J-Cush, is an artist manager and curator based in New York with strong ties in London, Chicago, and Los Angeles. In 2012, he launched the London-based Lit City Trax record label in conjunction with the Lit City Rave event series, which garnered attention from The New Yorker, The FADER, Red Bull Music Academy, and more. He was instrumental in bringing the footwork genre overseas, including releasing Teklife’s first projects on Lit City Trax, introducing the music to key labelheads, and even managing DJ Rashad for a period of time. J-Cush is also a tenured DJ who has spun across the globe and held a residency on Rinse FM.
