There’s a new app for art discovery.

Launched on April 5th, Corus is a social media platform meant to connect like-minded music and movie lovers. It was founded by Gabe Jacobs, one of the co-founders of its predecessor Cymbal (which shuttered in 2018 after three years), who describes Corus as “a way to discover songs and movies from people, not algorithms.”

He continues: “Social media has become soulless — full of advertising, brands, and bots fighting for our attention. Replace ads and selfies with great art, and you get the common ground for connection that early social media promised. You get Corus.”

Unlike Cymbal, which was more similar to Reddit, Corus acts as a cross between Instagram and Letterboxd. “[Cymbal] was great, but the focus moved away from the self-expression and social element,” Jacobs told HEADS KNOW. “Instead, Corus is going to lean into that side of things. It’s going to be about connecting and celebrating the art we love that we share in common.” Jacobs says the target audience for Corus is friendly, community-oriented art appreciators, artists, and people who are simply open to new experiences.

Free users have the option to share five posts a day, whereas premium members have access to unlimited posting, profile customizations, playlist exports, and a special “Favorites” feed featuring users they don’t want to miss. Because the platform is only two months old, Jacobs is continuously implementing new features, including feeds that highlight what’s trending in the community and new releases from the past 30 days. He says he is also working on ways to help artists make more money. Announcements about the app will be posted on Corus’s Instagram or Gabe’s Corus profile.

“This is already a dream come true to build and experience with everyone who is already on the app,” Jacobs says. “So much of the internet feels terrible for our mental health and hurts to use. I really want this to be different and to show that there’s a better way possible if you stay true to [your] values.”
