The Filipino New Jersey native’s commitment to his roots is magnetic — and his latest EP is just the hook.
New Jersey native producer and DJ WILHELMINA has been making his rounds across East Coast dancefloors, championing where he comes from with both budots and club music. He continues to represent his origins in his latest project, Book of Spells, a concept EP that captures the entrancing energy of techno and passion-driven Philippine culture and translates it into five Jersey Club cuts.
Book of Spells is extremely sensual. Right off the bat, WILHELMINA takes a 2003 hot girl anthem, somehow making it sexier than the original. In “Divine Hand,” the producer cleverly layers the song’s iconic call, a breathy whisper of “I think it’s time,” over insistent vocal chops and a frisky beat full of quintessential Jersey Club samples.
Book of Spells is woven together with its use of repetitive vocal chops, which is not only representative of East Coast club music, but are also aptly manifesting as ritualistic chants. Whether they’re pulling you to get up and dance or inducing meditation (“Introspection”), each track demands uninterrupted presence from any person it traps.
Over the years, WILHELMINA has proven he can produce any genre, but in Book of Spells, we see him at his most focused. The artist successfully extracts the sexiest elements from Jersey Club and techno, and infuses pieces of his own heritage to create a sound that’s distinctly him.
